History of the Area
The Auburn State Wildlife Area is a popular outdoor recreation area located in northeastern Ohio, primarily in Trumbull County. The history of the wildlife area dates back to the early 1900s when it was originally established as the Ravenna Arsenal.

The Ravenna Arsenal was established by the United States Army in 1940 as an ammunition production facility during World War II. It covered approximately 6,000 acres of land in Portage and Trumbull counties and played a significant role in the war effort. However, after the war, the facility was deemed surplus and was deactivated in 1949.

Soon after the deactivation of the Ravenna Arsenal, the Ohio Division of Wildlife took over the land in the 1950s and converted it into a state wildlife area. It was renamed Auburn Game Farm and primarily served as a pheasant propagation facility, where game birds were raised and released for hunting. The area provided an ideal habitat for upland game birds, including pheasants, quail, and chukars.

The Auburn State Wildlife Area has evolved beyond game bird propagation and now offers various recreational opportunities for visitors. The area spans over 4,500 acres of diverse habitats, including wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands. It is an important nesting ground for waterfowl, such as ducks and geese, and provides habitat for a wide range of wildlife species.

The Auburn State Wildlife Area is managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. Visitors can engage in activities like hunting, fishing, trapping, bird-watching, wildlife photography, and hiking. The area has several lakes and ponds that are stocked with fish, and hunting opportunities include game like deer, turkey, squirrel, and rabbits.

The Auburn State Wildlife Area continues to attract outdoor enthusiasts, conservationists, and nature lovers due to its rich history, diverse wildlife, and recreational opportunities.
