The name "Golden Anniversary" was chosen to commemorate Minnesota's conservation legacy and its dedication to sustainably managing forests. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Minnesota Conservation Fund, which was established in 1957 to promote forest management, wildlife habitat protection, and public recreation.

The state forest spans over 59,000 acres of primarily forested land. It is located in the transition zone between the northern hardwood and boreal forest regions, resulting in a diverse array of tree species. Dominant tree species found in this forest include aspen, balsam fir, black spruce, white spruce, red pine, and white pine.

Directions
The Golden Anniversary State Forest is located in northern Minnesota, near the town of Grand Rapids. To get there from Minneapolis, follow Interstate 35 north for approximately 150 miles until you reach exit 237B towards US-2 West/Grand Rapids. Merge onto US-2 and continue west for about 60 miles.

Once you arrive in Grand Rapids, take a left turn onto County Road NE and drive for around half a mile before turning right onto MN-38 North/Old Highway No.1 NW. Continue on this road for approximately seven miles until you see signs indicating the entrance to Golden Anniversary State Forest.

Continue on this road, passing through the town of Bovey and then Taconite, until you reach Grand Rapids after approximately thirty-five miles. Once in Grand Rapids, take a right turn onto County Road NE and drive for around half a mile before turning right onto MN-38 North/Old Highway No.1 NW. Continue on this road for approximately seven miles until you see signs indicating the entrance to Golden Anniversary State Forest.
