Horseshoe Lake State Park, located near Granite City in Madison County, Illinois, spans approximately 2,960 acres. The park's main feature is the large Horseshoe Lake from which it derives its name-a shallow oxbow lake formed by the meandering Mississippi River.

Opened to the public as a state park in 1966, this recreational area offers diverse activities such as fishing for catfish and crappie or hunting waterfowl during regulated seasons. Its sizeable wetland environment supports abundant wildlife viewing opportunities amidst bottomland woods and marshy areas.

The park also provides amenities including picnic facilities with shelters available for reservation; playgrounds; hiking trails that allow visitors to explore various habitats within the site; and boat ramps granting access to aquatic adventures on Horseshoe Lake itself.

You can enjoy fishing in a 2,400-acre lake with species like catfish, carp and crappie. There are also bass and bluegill available for anglers. The park provides boat ramps for easy water access.



Picnicking
Horseshoe Lake State Park offers numerous picnic areas with tables and grills. Some sites also have shelters for larger gatherings.
Birding
The park offers a diverse bird population, ideal for birdwatching. Visitors can spot waterfowl, wading birds and songbirds. The site is also part of the Mississippi Flyway migratory route. Birders may see rare species during migration seasons.
