Surf fishing, canoeing, swimming, nature study, boating, and picnicking will keep the whole family busy. For those interested in South Florida's underwater beauty, Lloyd Beach has one of the easiest and most interesting shore dives in the area. The park has two boat ramps with easy access to the ocean through the Port Everglades Inlet, which will please those who prefer to fish in open water. The mangrove-lined waterway is a scenic place to canoe, observe bird life, and take photographs. At the Loggerhead Caf?visitors can have a leisurely lunch or grab a quick snack. A variety of items are available for rental: canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, sailboats, pontoon boats, gazebos, barbecue grills, and volleyballs. Located north of Hollywood, off A1A.

Trails:
At the south end of the park, we offer a relaxing, 45-minute self-guided nature walk through a native subtropical coastal hammock. Here you can see examples of a seaside hardwood forest unchanged from the impact of development. You may also see wildlife such as squirrels, raccoons and a myriad of birds.
Picnicking:
We are pleased to offer park visitors a total of seven picnic pavilions, six of which are located within two-hundred yards of the beach. All of the pavilions include water, electric, picnic tables and a barbecue area. The seventh pavilion overlooks Port Everglades where visitors can enjoy watching the arrival and departure of the cruise ships. The pavilions seat between 100 and 150 people and may be rented per day, tax included. For picnic pavilion availability and reservations, please call (954) 924-3859. There are over 300 individual picnic tables situated throughout the park that are available to visitors at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
Boating:
Boating

Boating is excellent at John U. Lloyd Beach State Park. Whiskey Creek, a manatee sanctuary, flows through the park and is adjacent to Port Everglades and the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). It provides an excellent opportunity for viewing scenic wildlife by canoe or kayak. Motorboats can be accommodated from the ICW to just south of the restaurant, which is a short walking distance from our popular swimming beach. The park also has a boat ramp which provides easy access to the ICW. Ocean access is available through the Port Everglades Inlet, about a mile away. There is also a full service restaurant, "The Loggerhead Caf?; at the north end of the creek which provides canoe and kayak rentals.

Boat Ramp

Lloyd Beach has two boat ramps at our marina with easy access to the ocean through the Port Everglades Inlet. There is a user fee for the boat ramp. There is plenty of room for boaters to beach along the northern end of "Whiskey Creek" where the whole family can enjoy a picnic with easy access to their boat.
History of the Area:
The recreation area was named in memory of the late John U. Lloyd, Broward County?s attorney for more than 30 years, who was instrumental in acquiring the first piece of property that eventually became this park.

New River Sound was the original link from the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway and the New River in Fort Lauderdale. The Native Americans used this for access to and from the Everglades.

The "Barefoot Mailman" walked along these very shores in the late 1800?s to deliver mail to the hardy souls willing to brave the hostile environment before Interstates and air conditioning.

Whiskey Creek, as the sound is now known, was used for smuggling liquor during "The Prohibition Era". There have been a number of sites found just west of the park of old smugglers camps including liquor bottles and other evidence of their illegal activities.

On a more contemporary note "Whiskey Creek" is the location of the infamous "Murf the Surf murders".

Although the actual murders are well documented, the many sightings of the "Red Eyed Lady" are more for your interpretation. She is believed to be the spirit of one of "Murf the Surf"?s victims.
