State Park Overview:
Onaway State Park is located on the southeast shore of beautiful Black Lake in Presque Isle County. The park encompasses 158 acres of rugged but picturesque land, including sand cobblestone beaches, large unique rock out-croppings and a diverse variety of trees. You may observe all these natural features by hiking the park's three-mile nature trail. The campground, set among virgin white pines, offers solitude and serenity and plenty of family fun.

One of the DNR's oldest state parks, it was acquired in 1920 from Presque Isle County and private donors. The park was dedicated in 1921. It is located in an area that was once frequented by the Chippewa Indians.

Area Attractions:
A variety of natural and historic attractions are located near the park. Just 10 miles east of the park is the picturesque Ocqueoc Falls, the largest waterfall in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Another smaller waterfall is located a short walk down the river. Nearby, the Ocqueoc Falls is the underground river, a part of the Ocqueoc River that appears from a hillside and cascades over rocks and fallen trees on its way to the river bed. Fifteen miles south of the park is Shoepac Lake and the Tomahawk Lakes. Know for their good fishing, this area is also known for its sinkholes. Formed when springs eroded the soft bedrock, causing the surface to cave in, these sinkholes are now filled with trees, flowers, and wildlife. Shoepac Lake itself is a water-filled sinkhole of great depth. The nearby city of Onaway has been designated the "Sturgeon Capital of Michigan." Park visitors are also only about 45 miles away from Old Mill Creek Historic State Park and Fort Michilimackinac, a restored 1700s
