History of the Area
Woodman State Forest, located in Hancock, New Hampshire, has a rich history that dates back to the early settlement period of the region. Formerly known as the Hancock State Forest, it was renamed in honor of Herbert J. Woodman, a prominent forester who played a significant role in establishing the state's forestry program.

The area that is now Woodman State Forest was first settled by Europeans in the mid-18th century. The land was primarily used for agriculture, with settlers clearing the dense forests to create farmland. However, due to the challenging terrain and rocky soil, agricultural pursuits were often difficult and unproductive.

In the mid-19th century, the forest began to recover as farmers abandoned their unproductive fields and moved towards more arable land. The regrowth of the forest allowed for the establishment of a thriving timber industry. Logging became a significant economic activity in the region, providing a much-needed source of income for local communities.

As the demand for lumber increased, concerns about deforestation and forest management emerged. To address these concerns, the New Hampshire State Forestry Commission was established in 1881. The commission aimed to promote sustainable forestry practices and ensure the conservation of the state's forests.

In the early 20th century, Herbert J. Woodman became a key figure in New Hampshire's forestry program. Woodman, a native of Hancock, worked tirelessly to develop a comprehensive plan for forestry management in the state. He advocated for the creation of state forests to serve as demonstration areas for sustainable forestry practices. Woodman also played a crucial role in establishing the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in New Hampshire during the Great Depression. The CCC, a federal program, focused on conservation and provided employment to young men from families affected by the economic downturn.

In 1933, the New Hampshire State Forestry Commission obtained the land that would become Woodman State Forest. The forest was initially established as Hancock State Forest but was later renamed in honor of Woodman's contributions to forestry in the state.

Woodman State Forest covers approximately 2,777 acres and offers various recreational opportunities to visitors. The forest provides ample trails for hiking, wildlife observation, and camping. It also serves as an educational site for sustainable forestry practices, demonstrating the importance of maintaining healthy forests for future generations.
