History of the Area
Worthington State Forest is a state forest located in the Berkshire region of Massachusetts. It encompasses an area of approximately 1,400 acres and offers a wide range of recreational opportunities for visitors.

The history of Worthington State Forest dates back to the early 19th century when the land was primarily used for farming and logging. In the late 1800s, the forest started to gain attention as an attractive recreational area due to its natural beauty and proximity to nearby towns.

In 1915, the state of Massachusetts acquired the first parcel of land for the forest, and subsequent acquisitions expanded its size over the years. The forest was officially designated as a state forest in 1928.

During the Great Depression in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) undertook significant development projects in Worthington State Forest. CCC workers constructed roads, trails, picnic areas, and campsites in the forest, leaving a lasting impact on its infrastructure.

One notable feature of Worthington State Forest is the Keystone Arches, situated along the Westfield River within the forest's boundaries. These historic, 19th-century stone arches were part of the Boston and Albany Railroad, which operated in the area. Today, the Keystone Arches serve as a reminder of the region's industrial past.

Over the years, Worthington State Forest has grown in popularity as a recreational destination. It offers opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, wildlife observation, and seasonal hunting. The forest also hosts various educational programs and events, focusing on outdoor activities and ecological awareness.
