The Deschutes National Forest is a sprawling expanse of public land in central Oregon, encompassing roughly 1.6 million acres of diverse landscapes and ecosystems. Established on July 1, 1908, the forest boasts majestic volcanoes within the Cascade Range-including Newberry Volcano-a designated national volcanic monument.

Forested with ponderosa pine and high desert terrain, it offers outdoor enthusiasts an array of recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, mountain biking and skiing at Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort-one of its main attractions. The Pacific Crest Trail also meanders through this scenic area providing hikers with stunning vistas.

With over five wilderness areas including Three Sisters Wilderness known for its trio of towering peaks that dominate the skyline-the Deschutes National Forest provides habitat to various wildlife species while serving as a vital source for waterways like Metolius River renowned for fly-fishing opportunities.

History of the Area
Established in 1908, the forest located in central Oregon spans over a vast area of volcanic landscapes and dense coniferous forests. The region's history includes use by Native American tribes such as the Klamath, Wasco, and Paiute for hunting grounds and gathering resources before European-American settlement.

In the late 19th century, homesteaders began settling in the area however, many found it difficult to make a living from farming due to poor soil quality. Timber harvesting became significant with railroad expansion into Central Oregon around 1910-1920s which provided easier access for logging operations.

Prior ownership is attributed mainly to public domain lands managed by federal government entities like General Land Office prior its transition under U.S Forest Service management following establishment as part of Cascade Range Forest Reserve initially created back in 1893 then later re-designated reflecting current name post several administrative changes including splits mergers with other nearby reserves/forests throughout early-mid twentieth century.
