Nature of the Area
Pat Mayse Lake is situated in the Red River Basin in Lamar County, northeast Texas, near the Oklahoma border. The area around Pat Mayse Lake features a gently rolling landscape characteristic of the Blackland Prairies and Post Oak Savannah ecoregions with an abundance of native grasses, shrubs, and post oak trees. The lake itself was created by impounding Sanders Creek (a tributary to the Red River) for flood control purposes and spans approximately 6,000 acres providing ample opportunities for water-based recreation such as boating, fishing, swimming while also supporting diverse wildlife habitats along its shores. Surrounding lands are predominantly rural with agricultural activities interspersed with patches of woodland areas that offer scenic vistas and nature trails for outdoor enthusiasts exploring this tranquil part of northeastern Texas.
History of the Area
Constructed in 1967, the reservoir located in Lamar County was created by impounding Sanders Creek for flood control and water supply purposes. Prior to its establishment as a recreational area, the surrounding land primarily served agricultural functions with private ownership typical of rural Texas regions.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers oversaw the development process and continues to manage it today. Historical features within the park include remnants from early settlers such as old fence lines and homestead foundations that are scattered throughout.

Recent land use has shifted towards recreation; facilities now support camping, boating, fishing, hiking trails and picnic areas catering to visitors seeking outdoor activities. The lake also plays host to various community events including fishing tournaments which have become part of local tradition over time.

Environmental stewardship is emphasized through habitat restoration projects aimed at preserving native flora and fauna around this body of water's ecosystem while balancing human enjoyment with conservation efforts.
