MAILLIARD REDWOODS STATE RESERVE
MAILLIARD REDWOODS STATE RESERVE
The purpose of Mailliard Redwoods State Reserve, in Mendocino County, is to preserve and protect, in an essentially natural condition, the coast redwood forest and associated wildlife habitat which occurs along the Garcia River and adjacent watersheds. This park, in the hills three miles south of Highway 128, doesn't have any trails. The road passes through an old-growth grove with some mid-sized redwoods in an upland canyon. The sole facility is a single picnic bench by the side of the road. The grove has a dense understory of tanoak. It's not particularly impressive but it does give you some idea of what these hills might have looked like before logging.
