Put your phones away. Cell service completely dies once you hit the gravel forestry roads in Centre County. The park is tiny. You get just eight acres of quiet ground squished into a narrow mountain gap. Blink and you will miss it. A man named John McCall built a timber splash dam here back in 1850. Today, only the name remains. But the thick canopy of white pines and hemlocks still blocks out the sun.

So, why actually visit Go for the wild trout. White Deer Creek cuts straight through the property, offering cold, clear water that fly-fishers absolutely love. You will need wading boots. Do not expect fancy pavilions or flushing toilets. You get rustic picnic tables, charcoal grills, and basic pit restrooms. That is it. It is the perfect spot to escape your noisy group chats, eat a lunch under the pines, and just listen to the creek run.
History of the Area
In 1828, John McCall built a crude wooden dam across White Deer Creek to power his new sawmill. It worked. Then, greedy timber companies bought the surrounding forest. They rebuilt his dam in 1850. They wanted to create artificial floods to wash hemlock logs downstream to the Susquehanna River. The logging stripped the hills. Only dry stumps and flammable brush remained on the scarred hillsides.

The state purchased the ruined, deforested acres in the early twentieth century to let the mountains heal. Nature needed time. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps arrived at Camp S-120. These young men worked hard. They built a scenic public road right through the mountain pass. They also crafted picnic pavilions. You can still see their best work today a massive, rustic stone fireplace. It sits in a quiet clearing. Now, visitors just come to fish for trout in the cool creek. It is peaceful.
