History of the Area
Before becoming a state forest, the land was once owned by the Dodge family. The Dodge family had a long history in the area and had been actively managing the forestland for timber production.

In the late 1980s, concerns arose about potential development and disturbance to the natural landscape. To protect the land from such encroachment, conservation-minded individuals and organizations came together to ensure its preservation. The town of Hancock and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests collaborated with the State of New Hampshire to acquire the land.

Thanks to joint efforts, Dodge Brook State Forest was established in 1989. It covers approximately 1,687 acres of mixed northern hardwood forest, with a range of tree species including oak, beech, maple, birch, and hemlock. The state forest also encompasses Dodge Brook, from which it derives its name, as well as other wetlands, rocky outcrops, and small ponds.

Dodge Brook State Forest provides a variety of recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy. There are several miles of trails available for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Visitors can explore the forest's scenic beauty, observe wildlife, and get immersed in nature.
