BEAVERHEAD-DEERLODGE NATIONAL FOREST
The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest is the largest of Montana's national forests, encompassing approximately 3.35 million acres. It was officially established in 1996 through the merger of two separate forests: the Deerlodge and Beaverhead National Forests, which were originally designated as forest reserves by President Theodore Roosevelt in the early 1900s.
This vast landscape features a diverse array of ecosystems ranging from sagebrush flats to rugged mountain peaks that reach over 10,000 feet in elevation. The Continental Divide runs for about 160 miles along its western boundary offering spectacular views and challenging terrain for hikers and backpackers.
Recreational opportunities abound with numerous trails suitable for hiking, horseback riding, off-highway vehicle (OHV) use; plus fishing streams teeming with trout species make it an angler's paradise. Winter sports enthusiasts enjoy skiing at Maverick Mountain or snowmobiling across extensive groomed trail systems when conditions permit.
