Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through damming Denton Creek, a tributary of Trinity River, it was originally designed for flood control and to serve as a water source for Dallas and surrounding areas.
Spanning approximately 7,280 acres with about 60 miles of shoreline when at normal elevation levels (535 feet above sea level), this lake offers an array of recreational activities such as boating, fishing, hiking trails around its perimeter and camping facilities dotting its landscape. Opened on July 10th ,1952 after construction began in January 1948; today it's also known for hosting events like fireworks shows during festive occasions.
The main feature that attracts visitors year-round is the natural beauty combined with ample opportunities for outdoor sports including sailing clubs & marinas along its shores while being surrounded by parks like Oak Grove Park or Rockledge Park offering picnic spots amidst lush greenery overlooking tranquil waters.
