Lake Red Rock is Iowa's largest lake, sprawling over 15,000 acres and situated on the Des Moines River approximately four miles south of Pella. The main feature of this man-made reservoir is its multipurpose role in flood control, recreation, and environmental stewardship.
The construction for Lake Red Rock began in 1960 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with completion in 1969; it was officially opened to public use shortly thereafter. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as boating, fishing (notably crappie), camping across several well-maintained campgrounds around the lake perimeter.
Surrounding natural areas provide habitat for wildlife while offering hiking trails that showcase stunning views during all seasons-particularly noted are bald eagle sightings during winter months when they congregate near open waters at the dam site.

....moreBefore its transformation into a recreational area, the land surrounding what is now known as Lake Red Rock was primarily agricultural. Farmers owned and cultivated this region of Iowa for generations. The Des Moines River meandered through this landscape, serving as an essential waterway for transportation and trade.
Historically significant features within the park include remnants of Native American habitation such as burial mounds attributed to prehistoric cultures that once thrived in the area. European settlers later inhabited these lands, leaving behind farmsteads whose remains can still be found today.
In response to severe flooding events during the 19th century and early 20th century which devastated local communities along with downstream areas like Des Moines, federal authorities sought flood control solutions. Consequently, Congress authorized construction under Flood Control Act projects managed by U.S Army Corps of Engineers.
Completed in July 1969 after years of planning and development work initiated in mid-1950s; it created one among largest reservoirs designed both manage floods protect downriver locations from inundation while also providing opportunities outdoor recreation.
