LAND OF THE YANKEE FORK STATE PARK NAT''L FOREST HISTORIC AREA
Land of the Yankee Fork State Park & National Forest Historic Area is a unique outdoor destination located in central Idaho, encompassing over 400 square miles. This historic area was established to preserve and interpret the rich mining heritage that dates back to the late 19th century when prospectors flooded into Idaho during its gold rush era.
The park features remnants of old mines, ghost towns like Custer and Bonanza, as well as natural attractions such as scenic trails for hiking and off-road vehicle use. Visitors can explore an interpretive center detailing local history which opened in Challis on July 4th weekend in 1990. The Salmon River runs through this region offering opportunities for fishing and rafting amidst picturesque landscapes formed by past volcanic activity.
With diverse wildlife habitats within its boundaries including forests, meadows, riversides-this state park provides habitat protection while also allowing recreational activities such as camping at one of several developed campgrounds or dispersed sites throughout the forested areas.
