History of the Area
Long ago, Saura Indians fished these swift waters, leaving behind stone traps that still sit in the riverbed today. Then came the farmers. For generations, local families plowed the stubborn red clay to grow tobacco and corn. But everything changed in 1899. That year, industrialists built the Avalon cotton mill and a massive wood-crib dam to harness the river's rushing power. It was a busy hub. Disaster struck on a freezing June night in 1911 when a spark ignited the factory, burning the entire four-story structure to the ground in mere hours. The town died. The owners never rebuilt, leaving behind ghost-like stone foundations and old canal locks that the forest slowly swallowed up.

For decades, the land just sat there. Timber companies logged the steep hillsides while locals used the muddy riverbanks as their personal swimming holes. Actually, a churning rapid called the Boiling Hole became a legendary, albeit dangerous, hangout for brave teens. But development loomed. In the early 2000s, a local land trust stepped in to buy the property from corporate timber owners before bulldozers could arrive. They saved it. By 2010, the gates finally opened to the public. Today, you can still hike past old family cemeteries and rusted machinery. Go explore it.

Picnicking
If you are planning a trip to Mayo River State Park, you need to know where to eat. Go to the Mayo Mountain Access. There, a massive stone picnic shelter dominates the grassy area, complete with a fireplace and electricity. It fits 100 people. You can actually reserve the whole space ahead of time for a small fee. Perfect for family reunions. But you do not have to book the giant shelter just to eat a quick lunch.

Actually, the park has plenty of single tables scattered under the shade trees. These are first-come, first-served. Each individual site comes equipped with its own heavy-duty charcoal grill. So, grab some burgers. You can easily prep lunch while the kids run wild on the nearby playground. Clean restrooms sit just steps away. Fortunately, you won't have to deal with gross, smelly outhouses here. This makes a Saturday easy. Just pack up your cooler and go enjoy the woods.
