History of the Area
Oldaker State Wildlife Area is a public hunting and fishing area located in Noble County, Ohio. The history of this wildlife area dates back to the early 20th century.

In 1918, the Ohio Division of Wildlife acquired a portion of the land in Noble County for wildlife habitat restoration and management. This initial acquisition was aimed at providing habitat and protection for various wildlife species, especially game birds and mammals that were heavily hunted at that time.

Over the years, additional parcels of land were purchased and added to the wildlife area, expanding its size and recreational opportunities. The Oldaker State Wildlife Area currently covers approximately 4,348 acres of diverse terrain, including mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and reclaimed mine lands.

The reclaimed mine lands within the wildlife area once served as productive coal mining sites. However, in the mid-1970s, the Ohio Division of Wildlife began efforts to reclaim and restore these lands for wildlife purposes. This involved regrading the land to a more natural topography, planting native vegetation, and establishing wetlands to create a more diverse habitat suitable for a wide range of wildlife species.

As an important habitat area, Oldaker State Wildlife Area offers a variety of recreational activities today. It is primarily managed for hunting, with deer, turkey, and small game hunting being popular pursuits. Fishing is also allowed in the numerous ponds and reservoirs within the wildlife area. Hiking, bird-watching, and nature photography are other activities that visitors can enjoy.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife continues to manage and maintain Oldaker State Wildlife Area to enhance wildlife habitat, control invasive species, and monitor the overall health of the ecosystem. By providing a haven for wildlife and offering recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, this wildlife area contributes to the conservation efforts and enjoyment of Ohio's natural resources.
