Shenandoah River Raymond R. Andy Guest Jr. State Park ison the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and has more than 1,600 acres along 5.2 miles of shoreline. The park opened in June 1999. In addition to the meandering river frontage, the park offers scenic views of Massanutten Mountain to the west and Shenandoah National Park to the east. A large riverside picnic area, picnic shelters, trails, river access and a car-top boat launch make this a popular destination for families, anglers and canoeists. Twelve riverfront tent campsites, a campground with water and electric sites, cabins, camping cabins and a group campground are available. With more than 24 miles of trails,the park has plenty of options for hiking, biking, horseback riding and adventure.
History of the Area
The first component of Shenandoah River State Park was the 922-acre Jeni Tract, which was acquired in 1994 as part of a 1992 state bond referendum. In addition to the Jeni tract, other properties acquired for the park include the Maddox tract 171 acres, Hidalgo tract 7 acres, Parsall tract 22 acres, the Cullers tract 484 acres, and a tract from Norfolk and Southern of about 15 acres.
Cabins
Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, cabins and the lodge are rented by the week. Rentals start on Saturday or Sunday depending on the cabin. This requirement is reduced to a four-night stay three months out and dropped to two nights in the last month before arrival. A two-night minimum stay is required for the rest of the year. This park has no extra bed rentals. Cabins and lodges are open year-round and may be reserved up to 11 months in advance. Check-in is 4 p.m., and checkout is 10 a.m.

The park has one six-bedroom lodge that sleeps up to 16. No bed rentals. When a week-long stay is required, rental begins on Saturday. Check-in is 4 p.m., and checkout is 10 a.m.

Recreational yurts are a modern adaptation of an ancient nomadic shelter. They're basicallya cross between a tent and a cabin. The park has three yurts. Yurts 1 and 2 are in the River Right campground, and yurt 3, which is handicapped accessible, isin the RV campground. Each yurt has a large wooden deck, a picnic table, a charcoal grilland a fire ring with a cooking grate. Reservations are required. Parking for two vehicles is available at yurt 3 yurts 1 and 2 share parking with the River Right campground. Parking for those yurts is about 100 yards away. Wagons are available to move supplies to the yurts. Parking is first-come, first-served in River Right campground. More parking is available at Massanutten Shelter, which is several hundred yards away.
Camping
Camping is year-round. Shenandoah River's developed campground has 31sites with water and electric hookups for various equipment - tents, popups and RVs up to 60 feet long.The campground has centrally located restrooms with hot showers. Sites have fire-rings, picnic tables and lantern holders. Twenty-six sites are back-in, and five are pull-through.

Four camping cabins small bunkhouses also are in the EW campground. They are unheated. The maximum occupancy for the camping cabins is four. There are 12standard tent-only sites in the Right River Campground, which isn't near the EW Campground.

Picnicking
Four shelters may be rented through the Customer Service Center. Call 1-800-933-PARK. They are available in two sizes large and very large. They are rented all day from 8 a.m. to dusk. All shelters have lighting, are universally accessible, and feature pedestal grills, a water fountain and electricity a single 15 amp 120v receptacle. Also, all are adjacent to parking. Daily parking fees apply to all shelter guests.

Shelter 1 large - It is riverside, accommodates 50 and is universally accessible. The shelter, which is octagonal and has 900 square feet of floor area with seven picnic tables, is about 200 feet away from a restroom.

Shelter 2 large - It is riverside, accommodates 50 and is universally accessible. The shelter, which is octagonal and has 900 square feet of floor area with seven picnic tables, is about 150 feet away from a restroom.

Shelter 3 large - It is riverside, accommodates 50 and is universally accessible. The shelter, which is octagonal and has 900 square feet of floor area with seven picnic tables, is about 300 feet away from a restroom.

Massanutten Shelter extra large - This shelter overlooks Massanutten Mountain and the river, and can accommodate 100. It's about 34 x 34 feet with two 12 x 20 foot wings, is about 300 feet away from a restroom.
