History of the Area
Sleepy Bend Campground, located in Mississippi, has a rich history that predates its current use as a recreational area. Originally the land was inhabited by indigenous peoples who utilized the natural resources for hunting and fishing.

In the 19th century, European settlers acquired the property primarily for agricultural purposes. Cotton plantations dominated this region due to fertile soil conditions along with other crops like corn and soybeans.

Ownership transitioned through various private hands over time until it was purchased by John H. Thompson in 1924. The Thompson family maintained ownership of these lands well into the mid-20th century before selling them off in parcels.

During World War II, parts of what is now Sleepy Bend were temporarily used by military forces for training exercises given their secluded nature and challenging terrain which provided an ideal environment for soldiers preparing for overseas deployment.

Post-war era saw portions being leased out to timber companies interested in harvesting pine trees native to this part of Mississippi; however environmental concerns eventually led to stricter regulations on logging practices within such areas around late 1970s early '80s.
