STANDING BOY CREEK STATE PARK
Pack your bike. If you head just north of Columbus, you will hit Standing Boy Creek, a massive 1,500-acre tract of land that sits right on the edge of Lake Oliver. Most people go for the dirt. Local riders spent years carving out over twenty-five miles of singletrack trails, so you can count on plenty of steep drops, red-clay climbs, and fast downhill runs that will absolutely wreck your calves. It gets muddy after a heavy rain. Hikers share these same paths, meaning you have to keep your ears open for the buzz of incoming tires around those blind, pine-needle-covered corners.
Bring a kayak too. The park borders the Chattahoochee River's backwaters, which means you can slide your boat right into the ripples of Lake Oliver to cool off after a dusty ride. Do not expect fancy visitor centers. Actually, this place doubles as a Wildlife Management Area, so you might run into hunters during deer season, making bright orange gear a smart fashion choice. Just rugged Georgia woods. It is rough but totally worth the sweat.
