Stillhouse Hollow Lake is a reservoir located in Bell County, Texas. Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and water conservation purposes, it spans approximately 6,430 acres with depths reaching up to 107 feet when at full pool.

The lake was impounded on the Lampasas River in 1968 and officially opened that same year. It serves as an important recreational destination offering fishing opportunities for species like largemouth bass and catfish alongside various other outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, boating, and picnicking across several parks around its perimeter.

With clear waters conducive to scuba diving-a somewhat unique feature among Texas lakes-Stillhouse Hollow also supports wildlife habitat both aquatic and terrestrial within its surrounding natural areas. The Chalk Ridge Falls Environmental Learning Center provides educational experiences about local ecosystems near the dam's downstream side.
Nature of the Area
Stillhouse Hollow Lake, located in Central Texas near the city of Belton, is a reservoir on the Lampasas River created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and water conservation purposes. The area surrounding Stillhouse Hollow Lake features rolling hills characteristic of the Texas Hill Country with an array of native vegetation such as live oak, cedar trees (juniper), and various grasses that thrive in its limestone-rich soils. The lake itself spans approximately 6,430 acres with clear waters ideal for recreational activities like fishing, boating, swimming while offering picturesque views against a backdrop dotted with cliffs and rocky outcrops along parts of its shoreline. Wildlife is abundant around this man-made lake; it serves as habitat to numerous species including white-tailed deer and migratory birds which take advantage from both open waters and adjacent protected natural areas that contribute to regional biodiversity.
History of the Area
Constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Stillhouse Hollow Lake was completed in 1968 for flood control, water conservation, and recreation purposes. The land surrounding the reservoir has a history of agricultural use with ranching and farming activities dominating prior to its development as a lake.

Before federal acquisition for the dam's construction, local families owned much of this property; however specific ownership records are not detailed here. During excavation for the project, archaeological sites were uncovered indicating prehistoric Native American habitation around what is now known as Bell County.

The park area includes historical features such as remnants from early settlers' homesteads along with native wildlife habitats that have been preserved within designated natural areas around it. Recreational facilities developed post-construction offer various outdoor activities including camping, hiking trails and fishing spots which highlight both cultural heritage elements alongside environmental preservation efforts undertaken since establishment.

Recent land usage continues to focus on recreational opportunities while balancing ecological stewardship through habitat restoration projects ensuring sustainability of regional flora and fauna amidst ongoing public enjoyment endeavors at these grounds.
