The park spans 461 acres of land with ample water surface area providing recreational opportunities such as boating, fishing (notably for walleye), swimming at the beach areas.
Opened to the public on August 1st, 1984 after being authorized by legislation passed in April that year; it offers amenities including campgrounds with modern facilities and picnic areas perfect for family outings. Hiking trails meander through wooded landscapes offering glimpses of local wildlife while winter activities include ice-fishing and cross-country skiing when conditions permit.
Located in Calhoun County, Iowa, Twin Lakes was originally prairie and wetland before European-American settlement. The area saw agricultural development post-settlement. Two reservoirs were created by damming a creek for soil conservation and recreation purposes; these became the park's namesake lakes.
During the Great Depression, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) workers planted trees around the newly formed lakes to prevent erosion and enhance beauty. As outdoor recreation gained popularity after World War II, facilities such as campgrounds and picnic areas were developed.
The region has historical significance due to its proximity to early Native American trails that once crisscrossed Iowa's landscape. Over time, modern amenities have been added including cabins for rent while maintaining natural habitats like oak savannas.
Management practices evolved with an increased focus on environmental preservation alongside recreational use-balancing human enjoyment with ecological sustainability efforts within this scenic locale of central Iowa.
The park offers a variety of boating options for visitors. Two large lakes, North Twin Lake and South Twin Lake, are available where motorized boats can be used. Boat ramps on both the north and south lake provide easy access to water activities such as fishing or leisurely boat rides. Rental facilities offer paddleboats, kayaks, rowboats and pontoons for those who do not own their own equipment.
