History of the Area
The land for Twin Lakes State Park was initially bought from struggling farmers by the federal government during the Great Depression. Two parks, Goodwin Lake Recreational Area and Prince Edward Lake were founded in 1939.In 1948, M. Conrad Martin was denied access to Staunton River State Park, and a subsequent lawsuit filed against the state led to the establishment of Prince Edward State Park as Virginias eighth state park in 1950. The two lake parks operated as racially segregated parks until the early 1960s. In 1976, the parks merged, and the site was renamed Twin Lakes State Park in 1986.

Bicycling
Biking enthusiasts can enjoy the park's multi-use trails. However, caution is advised due to varying terrain and potential wildlife encounters.

The 15-mile trail system offers a mix of flat paths and hilly sections that require careful navigation.

Mountain bikers should be aware; some areas are steep or rocky which may pose challenges for less experienced riders.

Cyclists must yield to pedestrians on shared pathways as safety measures dictate this protocol in parks nationwide.

Riding after dark isn't permitted so plan your cycling adventure during daylight hours only for security reasons.

Remember helmets are mandatory when biking within state parks according to Virginia law enforcement guidelines.

While enjoying scenic views, cyclists need vigilance against possible obstacles like fallen branches or slippery surfaces especially post-rainfall periods.

Lastly, always adhere strictly to marked bike routes since straying off could lead into restricted zones causing unnecessary complications with authorities.
Birding
Birdwatchers can spot a variety of species including the Red-tailed Hawk, Barred Owl and Pileated Woodpecker. The park's diverse habitats attract songbirds like warblers during migration season. Waterfowl such as ducks are common on Goodwin Lake in winter months while Prince Edward Lake is home to Great Blue Herons and Belted Kingfishers year-round.
